I just got an insane quote for a Soarer.
Tried explaining its the same as the last car you insured for me, the SC400. No dice, almost $5k for 6 months. Ha, no.

thats crazy

Wow. That’s insane. I wonder what the logic is?

hmmm, I’ll ask around. My cousin just imported an R32, I’ll find out what his trick was.

That they don’t want to insure it.

Maybe they think you can only get parts from the car’s country of origin or something. That would make repair estimates nuts.

Maybe check with Hagerty? I see them advertising for collector car insurance all the time and presumably anything that’s old enough to legally import is also old enough to be registered/insured as a collector car.

Would genuinely be appreciated.

I’m sure thats it, but thats also why I want the Soarer. The car itself was sold here as the SC and the engine was in the MK3 Supra. but try to explaining that to someone who doesn’t care.

From the bit of googling I did, Hagerty has mileage caps .... I just put 100k on a Crossfire in 4 years.

I just sent a message.

Yep I just did a little googling and it seems like my hunch was correct. It’s an imported parts/specialty mechanic thing. I did find this:

Apparently liberty mutual insured his R32 for $200/mo

This is why Oppo is good.
Fortunately though Geico insured me for $1000 less than Liberty Mutual did so all’s good now.
Its past 5pm here so I’ll have to make a call tomorrow.

Insurance costs in the Eastern provinces in Canada for RHD are either nonexistent as nobody will insure it or astronomically high. :/

I’m in a similar predicament in Australia. My insurance company (JustCar) is closing down and all the quotes I’m getting are 4x more expensive than they were for my MR2 Turbo.
I thought reaching 30 meant insurance was finally reasonable

Hagerty aren’t the only people who insure custom/collectibles, just the most well-known. Most of your run-of-the-mill insurers won’t touch anything where you want more than $1k in aftermarket coverage, either. Yet show cars have insurance somehow.
I am sorry this helps you very little.

I can’t say I feel your pain, but I’m at least aware of it now.

JustCar is closing down? But they sponsored MCM!
But yea ... I’m 27 with speeding tickets, not great with any car insurance wise.

I appreciate the self awareness of the comment though.

Make sure you post when you find out. I do want to get a caterham eventually so I need to know as well.

Yeah, they were about the only mob that supported the modified and grey import scene. They have been a primary sponsor for so many events that I have no idea who will take their place. Maybe their parent company will relax the stuffy image of Shannons a bit.
